VIR is SOF’s answer to the modern intermediate caliber problem: how to deliver true midrange lethality and precision without giving up compact handling, suppressor performance, or system reliability. Built around 6 ARC from the ground up, VIR is not a caliber swap, it is a purpose engineered rifle system designed to bridge CQB and reconnaissance roles in a single configuration.

At its core, VIR was developed to run the latest Magpul 6 ARC magazine while retaining full compatibility with Magpul 6.8 SPC magazines. This dual magazine capability provides immediate logistical flexibility without compromising feed geometry or reliability. The system was engineered to support hard use, suppressed or unsuppressed, with consistent performance across configurations.

Coupled with SOF’s 6RFX suppressor, VIR transforms. In its shortened configuration, it remains compact, controllable, and efficient for close quarters work, with suppressed handling characteristics suited to confined and urban environments. Extend the rifle into its full configuration and VIR becomes a legitimate midrange reconnaissance platform, delivering accurate, repeatable performance out to 600 meters. The transition is seamless, no shift in role, no degradation in confidence, just a broader operating envelope.

Reliability is anchored by a ground up dedicated barrel extension, optimized specifically for the pressure curve and case geometry of 6 ARC. This architecture improves extraction consistency, bolt stability, and overall durability under sustained fire. At the same time, VIR maintains compatibility with MILSPEC bolts, ensuring serviceability, redundancy, and long term support without locking the end user into a closed ecosystem.

Ballistically, 6 ARC outclasses other military adjacent intermediate cartridges in this role. It delivers superior external ballistics, flatter trajectories, and improved energy retention at distance, while maintaining controllable recoil and efficient suppression characteristics. Compared to legacy 5.56 based systems and competing intermediate solutions, 6 ARC offers markedly better performance past typical carbine distances, with less compromise than larger frame platforms.
